Secret Life of Bees

I don't know what you kids are thinking if you didn't like the book. Are you crazy?! Braindead?! Out to lunch?! Or in the perverbial "FOG"?! Ok, Ok. so it might be labeled a girl's book, so it might be a little too syrupy sweet - you know, the Zach/Lily thing, the mother image thing, the Black Mary thing, the June/Neil thing, the Daughters of Mary thing ........ ok, ok So there's a lot of those things. But Monk's use of language was absolutely breathtaking at times, so much poetry in prose, so much "getting to the heart of the matter" thoughts - all of which gave me food for thought, ideas to mull over in my brain, ideas to remember. She wove incidents and images throughout the story - water images, drowning images, fire images, lots of them that came up unexpectedly and all tied together - that was sheer genious. And the ending .... the ending soooooo fit the story. None of that "lived happily ever after" crap. Accepting T-Ray and acknowledging that he too had a heart, accepting that she did indeed kill her mother - forgiving herself and T-Ray - knowing that we can all heal and change our perspectives was well worth the read.
